The Urine test can be done at home and tests the amount of hCG in urine. There are specialized products available in the market that detects its presence and confirm pregnancy. The best way to be sure is to perform the check again after an interval of three to five days. In addition, the hCG level in a few women may be too less to be detected by urine test.

It is much more effective in detecting even the slightest amount of hCG and thus can provide positive results in about six to eight days after ovulation. However, the blood test cannot be performed at home and you would need to visit an expert of the field.

The answer to the question - “When to take a pregnancy test?” thus lies in the method you are opting to get the result. Even if you test negative, you might still be pregnant because you actually conceived much later than you actually thought.

The best time to take a pregnancy test is a day after your period is late. In case you do not chart the irregular cycles, than it is better to wait one day more than the time of your longest menstrual cycle in the past. Like if the longest cycle was of 35 days, take a test on 36th day. A negative test can result in loss of money and brings disappointment.
